# Why Storage in Vista Costs Less Than Storage by the Beach

Sentry Self Storage units in Vista California

People call us from Oceanside and Carlsbad all the time, and the conversation almost always has the same beat in the middle. They tell us what they were quoted closer to the water. Then there’s a pause.

We’re not going to quote anybody else’s prices here. Call around, you’ll find out fast enough.

What we will do is explain why the gap exists, because it isn’t a trick and it isn’t a promotional rate that resets on you in ninety days.

It’s dirt. Land within a couple miles of the 5 costs a fortune, and a storage facility sitting on expensive dirt has to charge accordingly. It also has to build up instead of out — three and four stories, interior hallways, elevators, a loading bay everybody shares. That building costs more to put up and more to run, and the rent reflects it.

We’re on Laguna Drive, about fifteen minutes inland. The land cost less. We built out instead of up. All 403 of our units are ground level with a roll-up door, and you drive right to yours.

So a 10×10 here is $165 a month. A 10×20 is $257. A 10×30 runs $335, and if you just need somewhere to put a few boxes and the Christmas bins, a 5×6 is $75. Everything’s on the rates page, and the price you sign at is locked for twelve months.

The drive-up part is worth sitting on for a second. The savings are nice, but the thing our customers actually mention when they’ve moved over from a multi-story place is not having to reserve the elevator or drag a flat cart down a hallway. You back the truck up, roll the door, and you’re loading. A job that used to eat a Saturday turns into ninety minutes.

The tradeoff is the fifteen minutes. That’s the honest version — if you’re pulling something out of your unit twice a week, a place around the corner from your house might be worth the premium. But most people touch their unit once a month or less. Fifteen minutes, once a month, to save real money every single month is not a hard call for most folks, which is why we’ve got customers who drive in from San Marcos and Escondido too.

The military piece matters here as well. We’re about five miles from Camp Pendleton’s back gate, closer than a lot of what’s up on the coast highway, and active duty, veterans, first responders, and government employees get 10% off. Seniors get 5%. With PCS season the way it is, a Marine family that stores for eight months between duty stations is looking at a meaningful number by the end of it.

Everything’s month to month. Nobody signs a year. First month is a dollar.

We’ve been family-owned for close to forty years. There’s no regional manager, no corporate pricing algorithm quietly raising your rate because the software says your unit size is scarce this quarter. When you call, you get our office, and whoever picks up can answer the question and make the call.

Gate hours are 6AM to 7PM, seven days. Office is Monday through Saturday, 9 to 5:30. Come look at a unit before you commit — most people want to see the door and the drive before they decide, and that’s fine by us.
