Classes are starting back up, and our phone starts doing a specific thing every year around now. It’s a parent, usually. Their kid just moved into a place near campus and there’s a car’s worth of stuff that won’t fit through the door.

We’ve been storing student belongings in Vista for about forty years, so we have opinions about this.

First one: almost everybody rents too much space. A 5×6 holds more than you’d guess — a dorm room’s worth of boxes, a mini fridge, a desk chair, bedding, and a bike if you stand it up. That’s $75 a month here. Before you commit to something bigger, come look at one. Our manager, will walk you out to an empty unit so you can see it with your own eyes instead of guessing off a website diagram.

Second: month-to-month is not a small detail for a student. Semesters end, plans change, someone transfers or moves in with a roommate in March. We don’t do long leases. You give us notice, you’re out, no penalty. A twelve-month contract is the wrong shape for a college schedule.

Third: every unit we have is ground-level drive-up. All 403 of them. That matters at move-in when you’ve got a borrowed truck double-parked and two friends who agreed to help for exactly one hour. You back right up to the door. No elevator line, no hallway, no waiting on a cart.

Our gate is open 6AM to 7PM every day, which covers the early-morning loads and the after-class runs. Office hours are Monday through Saturday, 9AM to 5:30PM.

The stuff students actually store, in our experience: winter clothes and coats they won’t touch until December, textbooks they’re not ready to sell, furniture from a place they just left, surfboards and camping gear, and sports equipment that lives in a garage they no longer have. A lot of it is off-season stuff. A small unit is basically a second closet you can drive to.

One practical tip. Label boxes on the side, not the top. When they’re stacked you can only read the sides. We watch people rediscover this every single semester.

Pricing, since nobody likes hunting for it. 5×6 is $75 a month. 10×10 is $165. 10×20 is $257 and 10×30 is $335. First month is a dollar, and we lock your rate for a full twelve months. The complete list lives on our =

We’re at 1746 Laguna Drive in Vista, which is a straightforward drive from CSUSM and from Palomar’s San Marcos campus. Plenty of our customers come over from San Marcos and Oceanside. The drive is usually worth it — Vista rents cheaper than the coastal cities, and it’s the same freeway either way.

We’re also five miles from Camp Pendleton’s back gate, so we see a lot of military families. Military, first responders, and government employees get 10% off. Seniors get 5%.
