What to Do With Your Surfboards When Winter Swell Season Ends

You know the smell. Wet neoprene, old wax, and a hint of sand that never quite leaves the car. It’s the smell of a good season, and it’s also the smell of a garage that’s no longer a garage.

If you live anywhere between Oceanside and Escondido, you probably own more gear than you have room for. Two or three boards, a longboard you can’t part with, wetsuits for different water temps, a foil rig you swore you’d learn on. Add the kids’ boogie boards and the beach chairs, and the car doesn’t even fit in the driveway anymore, let alone the garage.

So here’s a thought. Give the off-season gear its own home.

Boards first. Before they go anywhere, rinse them with fresh water and let them dry fully. Scrape off the old wax, because it gets gummy and nasty when it’s stored. Check for dings and patch them now, not in the spring when the first good swell shows up and you’re scrambling. Then pad them in good board bags, store them flat or standing on their sides on a rack, and keep anything heavy off the top. A board stacked under a cooler for four months is a board with a crease.

Wetsuits are fussier than people expect. Hang them over a wide hanger or lay them flat, never on a thin wire hanger that stretches the shoulders. Make sure they’re bone dry first, or you’ll open the door to a science experiment. Skip the folded-in-a-bin approach if you can.

Same goes for paddleboards, kayaks, bodyboards, and the camping gear that rides along with all of it. Everything gets cleaner, dryer, and easier to find when it lives in one place.

Here’s why we think a storage unit makes sense for gear like this. Every one of our units is ground-level and drive-up. You can back your truck or SUV right to the door and slide a 9-footer straight in without turning a corner or hauling it up stairs. Our gate is open from 6AM to 7PM every day, so a dawn-patrol run before work isn’t a problem. Grab your board on the way to the beach and return it after.

We’re about five miles from the Camp Pendleton back gate, so it’s an easy run from base. Plenty of families come to us from Oceanside and Carlsbad, and we also see people from San Marcos and Escondido who’d rather skip the higher prices closer to the coast.

All 403 of our units are ground-level drive-up. Back right up to the door and load straight in. If you’re doing this solo with kids in the car, you’ll appreciate not having to wrestle a cart through a building. The gate is open 6AM to 7PM every day.

A few things make the whole process smoother. Label every box with what’s inside and which room it came from. Take a quick photo of how you stacked everything. Keep a short list of what’s in the unit somewhere you’ll find it. And if someone else might need to get into the unit while your spouse is away, give the office a call beforehand so there are no surprises at the gate. We’ve been family-owned for about 40 years, and we’re the cheapest storage in North County San Diego. No corporate parent. When you call, someone local picks up and actually knows the answer.
